Context & Challenge

Upon joining CSI as an Instructional Designer, I quickly identified a significant gap: there was no internal training available for colleagues on how to effectively use the Moodle LMS — a core platform used across the organization to deliver hybrid courses.

New hires, instructional designers, and academic staff were onboarding with varying levels of Moodle familiarity, leading to inconsistent setup practices and repeated questions around basic functions.

Solution & Initiative

Leveraging my certification and hands-on expertise in Moodle LMS administration, I proactively proposed and developed a self-paced video training series aimed at standardizing Moodle usage internally.

The first pilot video, “Course Reuse in Moodle”, was created as both a training tool and a proof of concept to demonstrate the value of building out a full internal course.

My Role & Contributions

  • Needs Analysis: Identified onboarding pain points and gaps in Moodle platform adoption among staff

  • Content Development: Designed the full script using a combination of colleague knowledge, internal course setup references, and official Moodle documentation

  • Media Production:

    • Produced professional voiceover using WellSaid Labs

    • Captured screen recordings using Camtasia

    • Edited the final video to align with CSI brand guidelines and accessibility standards

  • Instructional Design: Structured the video to guide users through clear, actionable steps using a scenario-based approach

Results & Impact

  • The Academic Department responded enthusiastically to the pilot video and saw immediate value in using it for onboarding and cross-team training.

  • My initiative was officially supported, and I was greenlit to develop a full internal training course for the CSI team, contributing to a more unified and confident approach to hybrid course creation.

  • The training is now being used to onboard new instructional staff, saving significant time and increasing the consistency of Moodle course setup practices.
